TYPHOONS AND TRAGEDY

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- At least one person was killed Sunday as Typhoon Morakot slammed into eastern China, packing high winds and torrential rain. Nearly a million people had been evacuated from Fujian and Zhejiang provinces as Morakot approached. The storm made landfall in the coastal area of Beibi Town, Xiapu County in Fujian province at about 4:20 p.m. Sunday (4:20 a.m. ET), according to China's state-run Xinhua news agency. Morakot's winds were clocked at 118 kilometers per hour (73 mph) in its eye, according to the province's meteorological bureau as cited by Xinhua. Five houses were destroyed as the front of the typhoon brought flooding rains to Wenzhou City in neighboring Zhejiang province just after 8 a.m. Sunday, Xinhua said.

No one can avoid facing typhoons that threaten our lives and often turn them upside down. However, we can build up the Self so that it can withstand natural disasters and, perhaps, come out even stronger through its challenge. How do we grasp the Self-building mode? The Provocative Qur'an reminds us that the answer depends on our worldview.

"
Generally speaking, there are three kinds of people. The dedi- cated Self-builders see all events, good or bad, as valuable Signs. For example, smart businesspersons will want to find out the reasons behind their success and try to build up their positive contributions; they also make failures their teacher and profit by them. Most of us belong to a second category: We enjoy our success without a second thought, but failures bring us to our senses. Some, however, are like Dim, the college student. They are so self-absorbed that their minds revolve around their own needs; even the worst misfortunes and ter- rible disasters teach them nothing. Our job, of course, is to move up. The college student Dim needs to become like us; we need to become more diligent Self-builders who learn not only from failures but also from success. How can we do this? The Qur’an shows us the way."

Typhoon Morakot is a time for all of us to help its victims with humanity and generosity. It is also a time to remind ourselves of our vulnerability to unanticipated misfortunes. Let us do our best to start Self-building today!
