YOU AND AN EMPOWERED SELF MAKE A WINNING TEAM
During football season our young people train their best to compete and win. Although every Friday night, bright lights shone upon the helmeted warriors, let us not forget that all athletes, whether they play tennis, water polo or any other sport, put their very souls into their practice and games.
It is not just our children who put their hearts into achievement. Each of us, when fired by something we desire or wish to possess, summons indescribable energy to pursue it. But as you pursue your dreams, have you ever wondered who it is that you are trying to please? Who is it that you are doing everything for? The answer is often, not surprisingly, yourself. If self, then, is truly your center, then shouldn’t you figure out what “self” really is?
There are plenty of reflective spots on our beautiful coast and back country. Join me for a few moments for an unconventional but revealing mental exercise at one of these spots.
Imagine that you are either riding the surf, hiking the parks or just sitting by the mission fountains. Now, just for the moment, set aside everything that shells your being. Forget, just for now, your upbringing and local culture, peer pressures and political correctness. Discard, just for now, your desires and hobbies, your religion and beliefs. If you are grown up, let go also of your sexuality. Recognize and connect with your idea of what is left of you. That, unshelled, is the core of your being, your self, the being for whom you desire all things, work hard all day, struggle ceaselessly.
Every year, many parents help their children collect butterflies for science projects. The thrill of running around green sage, up and down golden glades, chasing fluttering colors is exciting. Wouldn’t it be even more exciting to put the self — the core of our being, in charge of chasing all of our desires, longing and dreams? Ask yourself, then, am I really in charge? The answer may surprise you.
Everyone has a favorite car or truck and we can picture fun driving it around. But what if you had to carry this car or truck on your back? Chances are that you would be crushed under its weight. It may be hard to believe, yet most of us are not in the driver’s seat when it comes to our favorite desires and dreams; instead we live every day crushed under their burden.
Isn’t your self kicked and punched by upbringing, pulled and pushed by culture? If you love the driver’s seat, then why not go for it? Make this important decision today and your self will become the master of desires instead of being their servant; you will take control of your life instead of being controlled by it. By taking this small yet provocative step, life will no longer be a proxy of borrowed identities, but instead become an arena to score the goal of your own achievements.
Each of us, since childhood, has had a love affair with food. Unfortunately, after eating too much of the wrong stuff, some of us try to reject it. However, by focusing on food itself, the love-rejection relationship turns us into a cycle of losing and regaining unwanted pounds. Try instead the self-empowerment approach. Put your self in charge of pursuing the best nutrition for the body and you will replace conflict with assertiveness — take unwanted pounds off and keep them off. This, indeed, is true for all challenges in life. Once self takes charge, the failure of antagonism changes into a success of harmony.
I have studied success, whether it is dieting or leading a nation. Although no one talks about it, the powerful ingredient which makes successful people what they are is often none other than self-empowerment. In the alphabet of self-building, A stands for assertiveness — or more accurately, self-assertiveness.
So here is today’s tip for success: Whether you wish to become a successful student, score athletic goals, live a healthier life, or become the George Washington of tomorrow, empower your self and you will be on the way to writing your own destiny.
